| Keep your data safe Skype is a great way to keep in contact with your friends and family but its important to remember to keep personal information to yourself when using Skype and what you need to be aware of so your communications stay personal to you. Keep your password safe You picked your password when you registered for a Skype Name. Here are some tips for picking a good password:
- Pick a password that is easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess.
- Don't use the name of your dog, children, your car registration number or any other data that others might know about you.
- Change your password regularly.
- Do not write your password down anywhere.
- Do not tell your password to anyone, including Skype staff.
- If you are using a shared computer, for example in an
internet cafe, always log out after using Skype. Just go to the File menu and select "Log Off".
If you forget your password or would like to secure yourself against forgetting it, here's what you can do:
-
Get a new password – enter your Skype Name and the email address used when you registered for a Skype Name, and we will generate you a new password.
-
Change your registered email address – if your email address has changed, use this form to change your registered email address to which we will send the new password.
-
Change your password online – you can also change your password in the Skype client options. We recommend you change your password once every few months.
Remember that the password is the only means of authenticating you in Skype. If you forget both your password and your email address, we cannot help you and you need to get a new Skype Name to continue using Skype. Be conscious about your communications Remember that all sorts of people access the internet. Most of them have good intentions, but some might not. Always be alert about the data you publish and tell about yourself.
- Remember that your Skype profile can be seen by everyone
else using Skype. Do not put details in your profile that you do not want to be publicly viewed. You do not have to fill in your profile if you do not want to, and you can change it at all times.
- Always authenticate your communication partner before
starting to discuss any private or confidential details, such as your home address or sensitive work data. For example, if someone calls you and tells he is your colleague and urgently needs some info, be sure to ask some work-related questions that only your colleagues know an answer to, and keep your cool.
- If you are using Skype for work purposes, it's a good
idea to have a list of known Skype Names for all colleagues, and not to trust anyone outside the list.
- Set your
privacy options to avoid any unwanted communications.
- If your children are using Skype, educate them about the threats of communicating with strangers.
